Athletics: Selection for the European championships in Slovenia next month is the main incentive for many competitors in the national inter-counties cross country championship at Carrignavar, Co Cork tomorrow.
The teams will be chosen immediately after tomorrow's programme and a good result here will undoubtedly influence the selectors. Peter Matthews and the Northern Irish trio of John Ferrin, Dermot Donnelly and Gareth Turnbull are likely to be the main challengers to holder Seamus Power in the men's championship, while among those entered for the women's race are Sinead Delahunty and Rosemary Ryan.
Snooker: Ken Doherty gained revenge for defeat in last season's Scottish Open semi-final when he recorded a 9-4 victory over Graeme Dott in the UK Championship in Bournemouth yesterday. "I was keen to avenge that defeat by Graeme because the carrot dangling was a final against Stephen Hendry," said the former world champion.
Doherty now meets Stoke's Dave Harold.
Rowing: Today's Fours head of the river in London has a strong Irish involvement, with more than 20 Irish crews from north and south of the border listed in the draw.

There was also an important victory for UCD Marian who now lift themselves towards the middle of the table with a 82-79 win over Burger King Limerick at the National Basketball Arena.
