FROM Phoenix, Arizona to Sheffield with hope. That is the motto this week for Olympic possible Nick O'Hare. O'Hare will be the centre of attention in a 19 strong Irish team at the Grand Prix super finals at the English venue this week where all the great competitive talents of Europe will assemble.
Adrian O'Connor of New Ross is in the party but will not be feeling anything like as much pressure as O'Hare who is trying for an Olympic freestyle qualifying mark to become the fifth Atlanta bound Irish swimmer.
It is the Dubliner's final opportunity to convince the Olympic Council of Ireland of his worth.
Marion Madine, already assured of her Atlanta ticket, will not be fully satisfied until she makes an "A" qualifying time in the butterfly. This would entitle her to perform in her favourite stroke alongside Michelle Smith at the Olympics.
Youngsters who could become contenders for the Sydney Olympics in four year's time will also be competing. Among them are Hugh O'Connor, Chantal Gibney, Mary Corless, Lee Kelleher and Graham Beegan.
Competition takes place over three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, in the Ponds Forge pool in Sheffield.
