Former Wicklow intercounty footballer Robert McHugh was a worthy winner of the captain's (Richard Lynch) prize at Baltinglass on Sunday. The four-handicapper had clipped two shots off the course record with a two-under-par 66 in the first round the previous week and he followed up with a 73 gross to take aggregate prize with 131 net.

Ray Williams, Billy Bradley and Colin Sheridan were all in the clubhouse on 132 when McHugh came to the 18th and holed a nerve-jangling four-footer for victory.

He had previously won the captain's prize as a teenager, back in 1976, but channelled much of his energies into football in the intervening years. He won an All-Ireland club medal with Baltinglass in 1991.
