The three regional finals of the Peugeot Challenge Cup brought out the best in the qualifiers at Kilkenny, Limerick and Mullingar last week. From a field of 180 men and women, Ted Eighan returned a one-under par gross on his home course Mullingar, where Denis Ryan, a 16 handicapper from Donabate, led the qualifiers with a 66.
At Kilkenny, Peter Horn from the Kilternan club in Dublin led the field with a 68 off an 11 handicap while Liam Ryan from Castletroy shot a nett 70 off 11 at Limerick.
In the women's section, Vera Fitzgerald from Thurles was best of the day at Kilkenny with a 71 off 24 handicap. Bess Fennessy, a 21 handicapper from East Clare, topped the leaderboard with 71 at Limerick and Castle's 15 handicapper Barbara McAleese was best at Mullingar with a nett 72.
The qualifiers now head for Adare Manor on July 31st where 30 men and 30 women will do battle for the right to represent Ireland against 24 other countries in the world final in Paris in mid September. See www.peugeot.ie for a full list of qualifiers.
