NEWS: Manchester United's new assistant manager Carlos Queiroz yesterday vowed to help Alex Ferguson bring the trophies back to Old Trafford. The club pulled off a shock by naming the former Portugal and South Africa coach as Ferguson's new right-hand man on a three-year contract.
It will be a daunting task even for the experienced 49-year-old, as English football's most successful club of the last decade failed to win a trophy last season.
It is the first time the club have turned to an overseas coach but the Mozambique-born Queiroz follows in the footsteps of Archie Knox, Brian Kidd, Steve McClaren and Jim Ryan in serving as Ferguson's right-hand man at Old Trafford.
The former Sporting Lisbon manager joins the staff on a three-year contract and ends Ferguson's long search for a number two. The United boss said: "I'm really pleased that we have Carlos on board. He is someone I've been looking for for quite a while."
United's neighbours Manchester City have completed the signing of French international striker Nicolas Anelka from Paris St Germain. The former Arsenal and Real Madrid striker spent five months on loan at Liverpool last season, helping them secure runners-up spot in the Premiership.
However, he failed to agree a long-term deal at Anfield and has instead now completed the formalities with Manchester City after a £13 million move was agreed in principle at the end of last month. City boss Kevin Keegan said yesterday: "Anelka is still only 23, people seem to forget that, and he's got a lot to offer us. Whatever you say about him, his goalscoring record was tremendous at Arsenal."
As part of the deal, striker Alain Toure moves in the opposite direction, joining PSG after less than a year at Maine Road.
