Galwayman Jim Quigley, as you can well imagine, has been in very good spirits in recent weeks following his native county's win in the All-Ireland football championship over Meath.

However, the mood of the Charlesland member improved even more last Saturday when he completed a memorable hat-trick after he won the gold medal to add to the two silver medals that he had already won during the year.

The winners of the six silver medals play off for the gold and because 12-handicapper Quigley had won two during the year there were just five competitors. Quigley won this year's event with a two-under-par 70 from incoming vice-captain Tom King.

Meanwhile, also on Saturday at Charlesland, Fearghal Murphy (12) clinched the Golfer of the Year when he also shot 70 to win from Michael Lennon (13) on 71.
