Kerry made a successful start to the afternoon when their junior side defeated Cork in the Munster Junior Championship semi-final at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.

Kerry lead 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time with leading marksman Seamus Murphy scoring five points from placed balls. Cork's midfielders dominated for long periods, particularly Michael Monaghan, but the Kerry halfback line, inspired by the brilliant Ciaran Scanlon, kept the Kingdom in the game.

Cork levelled six minutes into the second half after Pat Dunlea converted a penalty, but the score that decided the game came in the 45th minute when Seamus Murphy's long-range free came back off the post and John Quirke found the Cork net. Despite late points from Dunlea and O'Regan, a fisted point by Quirke ensured a Kerry victory.
