Rain lets ban pair off hook

What was to be Ireland's second one-day match against Bangladesh was abandoned at Beechgrove in Derry yesterday

What was to be Ireland's second one-day match against Bangladesh was abandoned at Beechgrove in Derry yesterday. Heavy overnight rain had seeped through the covers on to one crease, and intermittent rain through the morning did nothing to help.

In the event, ruling the match out provided a reprieve for Stephen Smyth (Brigade) and Gordon Cooke (Limavady). Earlier, they had been given a one-match suspension for "breaking a curfew", according to the terse official statement. Translated, that meant that the pair had been out extremely late on Saturday night.

But Smyth and Cooke are back in the team for today's match at Eglinton, which looks suspiciously like a typically Irish solution to an Irish problem. Angus Dunlop, who would have captained the side yesterday, and Peter Gillespie, the hero of last Thursday's excellent victory at Waringstown, were not available for selection.

The 12th man will be either Ryan Eagleson (Carrickfergus) or Neil Anderson (Lurgan). Matt Dwyer and Ed Joyce will be making their first appearance against the Bangladeshis when play starts at 10.30 a.m.

Yesterday, the team managements agreed to play two one-day matches of 60 overs, with the second encounter to be played at Eglinton tomorrow. The original plan envisaged a two-day, one innings each, time game.

On Saturday, on their home grounds, the Northern Bank Cup holders, Limavady, crashed to 39 for six before rain stopped play, with Glendermott opening bowler Johnny Thompson taking four for three off five overs, including the wicket of Decker Curry. Limavady face almost certain defeat when play resumes this evening.

The other quarter-final matches - Ardmore v Donemana and Brigade v Drummond - have been rescheduled for next Saturday.
