Rangers are walking a tightrope after a gruelling 1-1 draw against Feynoord in last night's UEFA Cup fourth round, first leg tie at Ibrox.
Fighting broke out between the fans just as the players kicked off and it took police a few minutes to restore order and eject a few people.
Rangers best effort in the early stages came when Konterman, with memories of his recent fine goal against Celtic fresh in the memory, tried another 30-yard drive but this time the ball flew the wrong side of the crossbar from his point of view.
In that opening spell, however, it was the visitors who went closest when a rasping shot from Bonaventure Kalou whistled just past a post after 15 minutes. And they should have opened the scoring four minutes later but Van Hooijdonk, roundly abused by the home fans because of his Celtic links, headed a Shinji Ono cross over the bar when he should have done better.
Rangers stepped up a gear after that incident and Tore Andre Flo forced Edwin Zoetebier to block an attempted cross before Lorenzo Amoruso headed over from a corner. Perhaps sensing the game drifting from them, Feyenoord replaced Kalou with Robin van Persie and immediately Jon Dahl Tomasson went close with a fine effort from the edge of the area. Michael Mols then took over from Flo for Rangers.
A finely struck Van Hooijdonk free-kick was well saved by Klos after 67 minutes, however, but five minutes later Feyenoord struck with devastating effect. Numan lost a challenge in midfield and Ono broke forward and unleashed a ferocious drive which deflected off Konterman and past Klos for a priceless away goal.
But Barry Ferguson soon equalised with a penalty after Glenn Loovens brought down Peter Lovenkrands, a goal that may prove costly for the Dutch.
Inter Milan came from behind to secure a 3-1 win over AEK Athens. The Greeks took a surprising lead in the eighth minute when Thodoris Zagorakis beat Francesco Toldo with a delightful looping shot with the outside of his left-foot.
But Inter drew level six minutes later when their Argentine captain, Javier Zanetti, beat Dionysis Hiotis at his near post. Inter's Sierra Leone striker Mohammed Kallon put the Italians ahead eight minutes before the interval and 11 minutes after the restart substitute Nicola Ventola made it three. The atmosphere was muted, though, after an Inter fan fell from the second tier of the north end and was stretchered away by medical staff with a serious head wound.
Lille kept up their excellent European form, holding Germany's Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw.
