Rangers have begun what is expected to be a huge summer rebuilding process by signing Dutch international defender Arthur Numan from PSV Eindhoven in a reported £5 million deal.

The stylish left-back will follow his current coach Dick Advocaat to Ibrox in July after the Glasgow giants stepped in to fend off interest from Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

Rangers chairman David Murray was in Holland yesterday to finalise terms for a player who will be an important member of the Dutch international squad at the World Cup finals.

And he admitted that the 29-year-old's respect for Advocaat's coaching abilities had been a vital factor in the deal.

"Arthur is coming because of the Advocaat connection," he said.

PSV chairman Harry van Raay could not disguise his disappointment at losing the player. "If I was a player I would not have chosen Scotland for my career. I would have wished to have play in the top league available to me, which I take to mean Spain or Italy.
