ROMA 1,  REAL MADRID 0: Roma became the first Italian side to beat Real Madrid on their home territory in 35 years after a Francesco Totti goal saw them claim a memorable 1-0 win at the Bernabeu in an absorbing Group C match last night.

The Italian striker, who was a menace to the Real defence throughout, fired home past keeper Iker Casillas on 27 minutes after a rebound from a Vincenzo Montella shot had dropped into his path.

The result, combined with Genk's 1-1 draw at AEK Athens, means no team has yet qualified from the group, although Real and Roma are in the best position to go through to the second group phase.

Norway's Rosenborg were knocked out of the Champions League last night after a 3-0 loss to Inter Milan left them bottom of Group D with just three points from five matches.

Alvaro Recoba put Inter in front in the 31st minute with a low left-foot shot into the bottom corner.

Seven minutes after the break Christian Vieri, who appeared to receive the ball in an offside position, fed Sergio Conceicao whose cross was headed into his own goal by defender Janne Saariene.

Inter's third goal came when the ball fell to Hernan Crespo and he converted from close range.

Inter lead the group on eight points, level with Ajax who won 2-0 at Olympique Lyon. A draw in Amsterdam in their final match would be enough to secure qualification for the Italian side.

There was some good news for Arsenal last night, as Auxerre were beaten 3-0 at PSV Eindhoven.
