No your eyes aren't about to deceive you. Last Sunday, Billy Smyth went around Kilternan in 75 shots. Nothing unusual in that you might say. But if you take into account that Billy plays off a handicap of 22, it does make a difference as his nett score was an unbelievable 53. You can stop rubbing your eyes, it does say 53.
An incredible score by anybody's accounts and one I'm sure that Billy will hardly repeat again. Sunday October 1st 2000 is a date that will surely be etched in his mind for the rest of his playing days. Not surprisingly, Smyth's score was enough to win his class by an incredible 15 shots.
Although placing was being allowed on the day following the dreadful rain during the previous week, it was still a great round of golf.
Although Smyth had just the one birdie, nine pars went a long way to helping him accumulate his fantastic score. Having gone out in 38, he kept his head after the turn, coming back in an even better score (37) for his 75 on the par 68 course. The rest of the field must have been in awe at his performance. You can be sure he won't be playing off 22 again.
