Gary Speed can expect to feel the full force of his club's disciplinary mechanism next week after refusing to travel south for today's Premiership meeting with West Ham. Speed's anger at not being allowed to join Newcastle culminated in an ugly display of defiance on Thursday afternoon when he announced he would not be boarding the team bus.

The Welsh international midfielder submitted a written transfer request earlier in the week and had hoped to complete a move to Newcastle in time to make his debut in tomorrow's game at Aston Villa.

But, with Newcastle unwilling to meet an asking price of £6 million and Everton's manager Howard Kendall in no mood to compromise Speed now finds himself in limbo.

Kendall will recommend to his board of directors that Speed is fined two weeks' wages, or £20,000, for his petulant behaviour.

"I am very disappointed that he elected not to travel with us for what is a very important game," said Kendall. "At Thursday's board meeting there was an offer from Newcastle on the table and a transfer request from Gary. That request remains on the table but the offer was rejected. The natural course of action is that he will now be disciplined.

"I must make it clear that he will not go anywhere unless the deal is right for this club. If Newcastle are thinking that they can put in an offer and he can cause problems here which means we are just delighted to see the back of him, they could not be more wrong."
