Sarah Reilly is out of the Olympic 100 metres championship after finishing seventh of eight starters in the second round of the competition, reports Peter Byrne. Earlier, Reilly fully vindicated her selection by finishing third in her first heat in 11.56 seconds.

Nor was there any real joy for her husband, Brendan Reilly. He was taking part in the high jump at the same time as the women's sprint was in progress, but after going over at 2.20 metres, he failed to progress when the bar was raised to 2.24 metres.

Karen Shinkins missed qualification for the second round of the 400 metres championship by just 0.17 seconds when finishing fourth in her heat in a time of 53.27 seconds.

Meanwhile, Terry McHugh has announced that he is finished with Olympic competition after failing to make the cut for the final of the javelin. McHugh, Ireland's most experienced Olympian having competed in four summer games and two Winter Olympics, threw 79.90 metres in the preliminaries but rarely threatened to advance.

Equestrian sport

Austin O'Connor and Trevor Smith both recorded top-20 finishes on their Olympic debuts in the Individual three-day event, reports Grania Willis. Smith and the stallion High Scope notched up one of only five show jumping clears to take 18th overall. O'Connor and Horseware Fabio, with just a single rail off in the final phase, were one slot higher in 17th.

Rowing

The coxless four of Neville Maxwell, Neal Byrne, Tony O'Connor and Gearoid Towey will compete in the B final after a dissappointing fifth place in yesterday's semi-final, reports Keith Duggan. The Irish four finished over 15 seconds behind the winning Australian boat and five seconds behind the USA team who crossed the line to claim the third qualifying pace.

It's hard, though, to imagine the crew will be able to raise any enthusiasm for the B final. The four came to Sydney confident of challenging for medals but once they found themselves in the repechage, it was evident that they had serious difficulties.
