Martin Reilly's goalscoring prowess, so crucial to his side's winning of the First Division last season, deserted him as Dundalk had to settle for a point on their return to the Premier Division.
Reilly had the goal at his mercy as he prepared to connect with David Ward's cross with 10 minutes remaining. But he completely missed the ball and the match-winning chance was gone.
A tediously poor game was brought to life on 17 minutes, not surprisingly by a route one approach. Dundalk goalkeeper John Connolly's punt caught the UCD defence square and Ward was alert to the opening to race in and squeeze the ball past Barry Ryan and into the far corner.
Ryan then kept UCD in the game with a good save from Reilly's looping header on 28 minutes, and UCD equalised three minutes later. Robbie Martin collected a pass from right-back Alan Mahon to set up his older brother, John, who shot low into the bottom corner, despite Connolly getting a hand to the ball.

Police hunting a gunman who shot a Celtic fan in the chest at a crowded Amsterdam bar have recovered a weapon and clothes dropped by the suspect.
Officers said there was still no clear motive for the attack on Lewis Rodden, 41, from Glasgow, who was in the city to watch his team in their Champions League qualifier against Ajax.
Mr Rodden was yesterday in a stable condition at the AMC hospital in Amsterdam where he underwent emergency surgery.
