• Brian Vera stops the previously unbeaten Andy Lee in the seventh round.

• Kenenisa Bekele wins the World Cross Country Championship for a record sixth time.

• St Vincent's of Dublin beat Cork side Nemo Rangers in the All-Ireland Club football final at Croke Park, while Galway's Portumna trump Birr of Offaly in the hurling equivalent.

• Six Irish winners at Cheltenham Festival, but none in the major races.

• Katchit wins the Champion Hurdle while the English champion trainer Paul Nicholls masterminds a 1-2-3 in the Gold Cup with Denman holding off the challenge of Kauto Star.
