• Cork beat Monaghan to win the women's All-Ireland football final and the county also claim a third camogie All-Ireland in a row; Tyrone beat Kerry to win the All-Ireland senior football final and Kilkenny hammer Waterford in the hurling decider.

• Aidan O'Brien completes an Irish clean sweep when Septimus wins the Irish Ledger.

• Jason Smyth (above) wins the 100 metres and 200 metres, breaking each world record, to win two gold medals at the Paralympics.

• New Approach wins the Irish Champion Stakes.
