Reserve ruling

Special provision has been made for reserve runners in Sunday's Sagitta 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

The use of the July course instead of the Rowley Mile this year means that the maximum permitted field for the classic is 23 rather than 30. There are currently 27 entries remaining which leaves the possibility of eliminations at tomorrow's final declaration stage.

The British Horseracing Board yesterday agreed with the Newmarket Executive to add reserve runners if necessary in descending order of rating after the 48-hour declaration stage and up to 9.30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Should the number of declared runners exceed 23 then trainers will be asked to notify Weatherbys if their filly is unable to run. Such notification will constitute irretrievable withdrawal of the horse.
