Wynyard Knight and Brother Of Iris gave super displays of jumping at Doncaster yesterday to leave their trainer Mary Reveley contemplating a visit to one of her least favourite racing events.
Reveley has never been in love with the charms of the Cheltenham Festival but the promising pair, both ridden by Peter Niven, appear worthy of taking part at the meeting.
Their trainer has yet to have a winner at the Festival but bookmakers were taking no chances, with Ladbrokes slashing Wynyard Knight's price to 16 to 1 (from 33s) and Coral going 14 to 1 (from 20s) for the Guinness Arkle Challenge Trophy.
Wynyard Knight, carrying the black and white colours of the former Newcastle United chairman Sir John Hall, made most of the running unlike the majority of Reveley runners.
His task may have been easier by the exits of Sweep Gently (fell six out) and Circus Star (unseated rider at the fourth last) but the clear-cut nature of the victory - he was 12 lengths clear of Native Charm at the line - suggests he would have won comfortably anyway.
"I was delighted with him today - he jumped really well," said Reveley. "He doesn't have to make the running but he seemed quite happy in front. We'll give him another run before we even think about Cheltenham.
"But as you know Cheltenham is not my favourite place - and maybe he will go down with the cough a few weeks before the Festival!"
Brother Of Iris fenced spectacularly for much of the journey but was less impressive when striking the front five out in the Sandall Beat Novices' Handicap Chase. He was never in danger of coming down, however, and came home unchallenged by 11 lengths from Zaitoon.
Brother Of Iris is entered for the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Chase but if the trainer has her way he won't be going to the Festival.
"I know the owners would like to go and although I have no worries about his jumping I think the whole race would get to him - he'd be a wreck," she said.
Cheltenham is also on the agenda for All Gong and Goodtime George after the pair obliged at short prices.
Adrian Maguire damaged a knee and was ruled out for the remainder of the day when unseated from Circus Star but the jockey was confident of returning today at Doncaster where he has six booked rides.
Mystic Isle could be on course for the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter after his successful reappearance following an absence of 276 days in the Newington Peene Handicap Chase at Folkestone.
