SCHOOL'S RUGBY/Colaiste Iognaid ... 16 Garbally College ... 3: Colaiste Iognaid were crowned Connacht Schools Senior Cup champions after they overcame Garbally, Ballinasloe, in the final at the Galway Sports Ground yesterday.
This was their first time to take this cup since the 1984-85 season, and their fifth time in all.
Garbally opened the scoring on 19 minutes with a penalty from 36 metres by centre and captain Imor Barrett, which turned out to be their only score of the match.
Colaiste Iognaid came back to level matters five minutes later when man of the match Daniel Riordan equalised with a penalty from the 22 to leave the score at 3-3 at the interval.
The victors took the lead early in the third quarter when Riordan once more slotted home a penalty from inside the 22. Riordan successfully kicked his third penalty in the final quarter.
Barrett missed a penalty attempt for Garbally in the 56th minute.
Colaiste Iognaid left winger Dominic Gilmore then scored the only try of the match on 62 minutes, after he had been set up by number eight and captain Val Baynes. Riordan, impressive with the boot, converted well.
