A mere mortal, just like the rest of us. For most of this Sunday afternoon in July, David Duval had seemed to be the only living thing capable of catching the Tiger. Then, on the 17th, the infamous Road Hole at St Andrews, we found out that he was only human after all.
Duval's aggressive approach to the penultimate green in the British Open had finished close to the face of the most famous bunker in golf and, like so many before him, it was to prove a shot too many.
In the end, it took Duval - who had cut a six-shot deficit to Woods to just three at the turn by birdieing four of his first seven holes - four shots just to escape from the sand trap.
