DCU 0-18 Wicklow 1-14:DEAN ROCK, a son of former Dublin great Barney, showed he is a chip off the old block as he helped DCU into the second round of the O'Byrne Cup at Baltinglass yesterday.
The holders had two players, Anthony McFadden and Jonathan Cooper, sent off during the match.
Rock racked up nine points in total during the game, six of them from frees. Late scores by Gary Sweeney Dean Roche and Eoghan O’Gara gave DCU a 0-13 to 1-7 interval lead. Joey Kelly scored Wicklow’s goal after 20 minutes.
DCU were reduced to 14 men when McFadden picked up a red card but they led 0-16 to 1-11 at the end of the third quarter. Wicklow came with a late burst of points by Seanie Furlong (free) Nicky Mernagh and Austin O’Malley but came up short at the final whistle.
