Men's Hockey Round-up: The last Saturday of the Leinster Senior League was played with some abandon and yielded a stream of goals, notably with new title holders Three Rock Rovers going 5-1 up against Railway Union before easing to a 5-4 win at Grange Road.
Appropriately, Garry Ringwood and Peter McConnell, who had earned Leinster Branch player of the month awards for January and February, rattled up the Rovers tally between them. The team, coached by Bert Vreeken, lost only two games, both to defending champions Glenanne.
Although Three Rock have won the title more times than any other club, they will be making their debut in the modern-day all-Ireland championship and must tackle Instonians in the quarter-finals, with the first leg in a fortnight.
Aer Lingus finished their campaign encouragingly (in preparation for their 50th anniversary season) with a 5-4 defeat of all-Ireland qualifiers Corinthians, while Trinity completed their surge back to the first division by scoring eight goals against Bray. Naas will qualify for the promotion/relegation play-off against UCD if they beat St Brendan's next Saturday.
Stephen Butler and Justin Sherriff took part in the national squad training session in Dublin on Saturday but returned yesterday to Brussels for a Belgian League match in which their club, Antwerp Dragons, lost 1-0 to Waterloo Ducks. The Dragons, though, are holding down second place in the table, four points behind the leaders, Royal Antwerp.
