Munster Senior League side Rockmount caused the shock of the first round of the League Cup by knocking out holders Cork City on penalties at Turner's Cross yesterday.

Having defended superbly, with goalkeeper Packie Cassidy magnificent, Rockmount showed further nerve to score all five of their penalties in the shoot-out with Pat Oldham getting the crucial fifth, after Cork's John Cotter was the only player to miss. A Peter Hanrahan hat-trick sent UCD comfortably through to the next round after a 5-0 trouncing of St. Francis at Baldonnel.

Hanrahan's glancing header from an Eoin Bennis corner opened the account on 27 minutes. Hanrahan struck for his second goal two minutes into the second-half, this time from a Mick O'Byrne corner, to drill a shot past Trehy.

The same pair combined once more on 62 minutes for Hanrahan to head his hattrick. O'Byrne and substitute Ken Kilmurray completed the rout.
