TRANSFER NEWS:READING MANAGER Brendan Rodgers has described Kevin Doyle as one of the best signings in the club's history, but acknowledged the only benefit he is likely to see from it is whatever portion of a transfer fee is made available to bring in replacement players, writes EMMET MALONE
“He has got to be one of the best signings in the club’s history,” said Steve Coppell’s recently appointed replacement. “I’d love to have the opportunity to work with him because everything I hear about him is good. I understand he is the ultimate professional and he prepares himself in a similar manner to the top players. Like all big professionals, he is serious about his work and is ambitious.”
But that very ambition, Rodgers admits, is likely to prompt the Ireland international’s departure, with Wolves and Fulham having talked to the striker, the likes of Bolton and Sunderland reported by a number of British newspapers to be considering offers and Everton and Aston Villa rumoured to have been interested.
“I plan to talk to Kevin when I get back,” said Rodgers, “but I was aware before I was appointed manager that Kevin and one or two others were likely to move on.
“I certainly won’t stand in his way. He is a good age, but the club will get a good return on what they paid out for him.”
The club’s director of football confirmed there has been interest from a number of clubs but insisted “nothing is imminent.” In fact, it is unlikely the 25-year-old will move before next week.
Wolves chairman Steve Morgan confirmed his side’s desire to land the striker while suggesting he couldn’t say anything. “Kevin Doyle is an excellent player, but we don’t talk about the players we’re looking at. If a player like Doyle becomes available we have to be interested, but we’d rather not comment on any individual.”
Stephen Hunt, meanwhile, is also still intent on leaving Reading too, although the club appear to be still waiting the sort of firm offer for the midfielder that would trigger his €5.75 million release clause.
“Hunty has been fantastic for us,” says Hammond. “He wants a Premiership move having had one season in the Championship and I can understand that and if there is a deal that is right for all parties then we’ll have to have a look at it, but at this point there is not.”
