EUROPEAN ROUNDUP/ITALY: Striker Vincenzo Montella stunned Lazio with four goals as Roma romped to a 5-1 win in the Rome derby to go top of Serie A last night.

Montella scored a hat-trick in 30 minutes to put Roma firmly in control before half-time, twice netting with headers and one with a typical poacher's instinct.

Dejan Stankovic pulled one back nine minutes after the interval with a superb 25-metre effort before Montella added his fourth with an equally impressive strike on 64 minutes.

Roma captain Francesco Totti capped a fine night for the reigning champions with a delightful chip 18 minutes from time.

Lazio fans, whose behaviour prompted a teargas release early in the second half, had left the stadium in their thousands well before the final whistle, with some of those remaining setting fire to seats in a show of disgust.

SPAIN: Valencia returned to the top of the league in a game that striker Miguel Angel Angulo will remember for a long time. Angulo sealed a 2-0 victory over Sevilla with a strike in the 89th minute but then let his celebrations get the better of him, ripping off his shirt and running towards a section of the crowd to share the moment with spectators.

The act led to the referee showing the Valencia man a second yellow card and sent him off, much to the anger of the majority of people in the 52,000 crowd.

Sevilla, who created little up front throughout, also had a man sent off with Salas Benos Victor seeing red for a second bookable offence 15 minutes from time.

Athletic Bilbao missed out on the chance of closing in on the leading pack, going down 2-0 at Espanyol. A goal in each half by Ricardo Cavas and Enrique de Lucas did the damage.

Espanyol remain in mid-table but leapfrog Sevilla and Real Valladolid.

Valladolid went down 4-2 at home to Celta Vigo, Catanha playing the hero's role for the visitors by scoring a hat-trick.

Real Mallorca eased their relegation worries with a 4-2 home win over Osasuna.
