Roscommon hit by injuries

GAELIC GAMES/NEWS: A substantial injury list continues to prevent Roscommon from fielding their strongest team

GAELIC GAMES/NEWS: A substantial injury list continues to prevent Roscommon from fielding their strongest team. Three vacancies have been left in the selection to play Galway at Hyde Park and manager John Tobin won't know who can fill them until closer to Sunday's throw-in.

The significance of this game - the result will have a major bearing on the Division One A standings - means Tobin will strive to get first-choice players into the vacancies. But midfielder Donal Casserly, wing forward Gary Cox, and full forward Gerry Lohan are doubtful. Jarlath Egan is certainly in contention for one of the forward positions.

The Connacht champions are already without the injured Fergal O'Donnell, Michael Ryan, Conor Connelly and Frankie Dolan. Chasing Tyrone and Dublin, Roscommon and Galway have four points to date - though with a game in hand Roscommon are better placed to move into one of the play-off position if the result goes their way. Opponents Galway are better positioned injury wise although Michael Donnellan is carrying a leg injury.

Kildare can close the gap on Mayo in Division One B when the two sides meet at Newbridge on Sunday. Manager Mick O'Dwyer has made three changes from the side that fell to Fermanagh last Sunday, welcoming back Martin Lynch and John Doyle from illness while Ronan Sweeney returns to midfield.

There is a vacancy left at centre forward on the assumption Karl O'Dwyer can recover from a minor leg injury. In defence Michael Wright moves to corner back and Kenny Duane to wing back. Kildare have accepted they will be without Brian Lacey for the rest of the league because of a neck injury.

Mayo won't finalise their team until closer to Sunday while Fermanagh have named the same team to play Derry as toppled Kildare a week ago.

Westmeath have made three changes from the team that fell to Dublin last Sunday. Full back David Mitchell, left corner-back Fergal Murray and right half forward Derek Heavin give way to Russell Casey, Kenny McKinley and David O'Shaughnessy for Sunday's meeting with Donegal.

Meanwhile, the GAA's Games Administration Committee continue their investigation into last month's controversial draw between Kildare and Sligo, where Kildare were alleged to have used six substitutes. A decision is expected at their meeting next Wednesday night. It has emerged, however, that Tyrone referee Michael Hughes had only a record of three Kildare substitutes in his report, while Kildare are stating two of their "reported" substitutes was the same player who changed out of a blood-stained jersey.
