As expected, Roscrea qualified for the quarter-finals of the Leinster Schools' Senior Cup with a comprehensive victory over Gonzaga at Portlaoise yesterday.
Roscrea looked very impressive in the opening half and despite playing into a stiff breeze, they led 6-0 at the interval. Both scores came from penalties by Redmond Barry, the first a massive kick from 55 yards after 15 minutes and followed by a second five minutes later from 40 yards. The Dublin side had two opportunities to draw level when they won two close-in penalties. However, Brian McCluskey was off-target on both occasions.
Aided by the wind in the second half, Roscrea soon took control when Leinster inter-provincial Pat McCarthy went over for a try after 21 minutes. Gonzaga trailed by 11 points and whatever lingering hopes they had were dashed when Barry Phelan ran 80 metres to score his side's second try after 25 minutes and with Redmond Barry converting and adding a further penalty five minutes before full-time, the Roscrea side strode into the last-eight stage.
