EUROPA LEAGUE SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND: Bnei Yahuda (1) v Shamrock Rovers (1)SHAMROCK ROVERS take on Bnei Yehuda and the Israeli heat this evening with an "Old Lady" on their minds. A plum tie with Juventus is the prize at stake at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium and the Tallaght-based club's manager, Michael O'Neill, believes his in-form side have nothing to fear from their hosts.
Bnei Yehuda have the away goal advantage, but the tie is delicately poised at 1-1 and the former Northern Irish international is using the prospect of a visit of the Italian giants to Rovers’ Tallaght Stadium to motivate his players.
“The player’s know the significance of a game like that,” he said. “They know that taking part in a game like that would be a major highlight in their career. They’ve been very professional, I haven’t heard it mentioned much to be honest.
“The problem is that the draw was made before we played Galway and we never mentioned it at all. We have talked about it briefly here and we’ll talk about it at training.
“So, that will be an incentive. I don’t think it will make them anxious or nervous in any way. I think it’s there to give them that bit of added inspiration, probably, to be part of a game like that – particularly in Tallaght.”
Rovers are top of the National League table and unbeaten in 10 games. O’Neill has no late injury worries and says his side have the belief necessary to progress.
“Confidence is high,” he said. “We’re in a nice enough position in the tie, I’m not taking it for granted by any manner of means but I think we’ll get chances and if we can take those, I think we’re strong enough at the back to make that count.
“I don’t think they expected as tough a game in Tallaght as they got, judging by their reaction after the game. I think they will be more wary of us.”
