St Mary's progress in cup

Despite fielding a below-strength side, St Mary's College defeated Greystones 39-14 in the AIB All-Ireland Cup at Templeville Road yesterday.

St Mary's wing Henrick Gervais proved very effective breaking off first phase and his two tries were well deserved. Greystones had their work cut out throughout the course of the afternoon, with the Mary's pack conceding little ground.

And they had the game well wrapped up by half-time with centre Barry Lynch kicking three conversions, a penalty and a drop goal. Having put his team six points up, Lynn then converted a Dara Fanning try in the 23rd minute. Two further tries from John Kilbride and Gervais, both converted by Lynn, left Mary's leading 27-0 at the break.

A great break from Karl O'Brien then set up Gervais for his second try on 47 minutes, a score which was once more converted by Lynn.

Greystones finished well with Ronan Carroll scoring two fine tries from the right wing. But Mary's, who were keen to put their disappointing display against Lansdowne behind them, finished the game off when David Kilbride made the line near the end.

Morgan joins Wales' injury list

Wales coach Mike Ruddock has been dealt another major injury blow with the loss of Grand Slam star Kevin Morgan for this season's entire Six Nations Championship.

Morgan, whose try sealed the Six Nations title with victory over Ireland last March, suffered a dislocated foot during Newport- Gwent Dragons' Celtic League defeat against Cardiff last Tuesday.

He will undergo surgery next week, when the main bone in his foot will be screwed back to the ankle. The Dragons fullback faces four months out of action, compounding Ruddock's injury woes just five weeks before Wales launch their Six Nations campaign against England at Twickenham.

Lions forwards Ryan Jones and Brent Cockbain are already out of the tournament due to injuries, while centre Tom Shanklin is another long-term absentee and Gavin Henson's 10-week suspension after he was cited for elbowing an opponent during a Heineken Cup game, means he misses Six Nations appointments with England, Scotland and Ireland.

Wilkinson in Newcastle squad

Jonny Wilkinson has been named in a 27-man squad for Newcastle's English Premiership clash against Worcester on Sunday.

But a decision on whether or not he makes Falcons' match-day 22 will not be made until after training today.

The English outhalf has not played for more than six weeks, having undergone groin surgery in yet another fitness setback during a catalogue of injuries over two years. Wilkinson has only started four games for Newcastle this season.

Falcons officials are confident the Worcester game will go ahead at Kingston Park, despite heavy snowfall in the north-east. More than 7,500 tickets have already been sold.
