South Africa 26 All Blacks 45: Champions New Zealand beat the Springboks 45-26 in their Tri-nations test today to register their first win in South Africa since 2003.

The home side dominated the opening 10 minutes and took an 11-3 lead. And despite losing fullback Leon Macdonald and prop Greg Somerville to injuries in the opening stages, the All Blacks clawed their way back into the match via the lethal boot of flyhalf Dan Carter.

Carter kicked three first-half penalties, the last after the hooter from 61 metres, and his deft chip set up prop Neemia Tialata's try.

The All Blacks led 16-11 at half-time and victory was secured midway through the second period as centre Luke McAlister, Mils Muliaina, playing at fullback, and wing Sitiveni Sivivatu scored tries.

After a try by scrumhalf Fourie du Preez and penalties from fullback Percy Montgomery and flyhalf Butch James, South Africa simply lost steam.

Their basic ball-handling and retention of possession at the breakdown was poor, although they showed some heart in the final quarter when centre Jaque Fourie ran in two tries.
