Italy 16-23 Argentina:A strong second-half performance by Argentina gave the visitors a 23-16 win over Italy at Rome's Stadio Flaminio today.
Tries by inside centre Miguel Avramovic and flyhalf Federico
Todeschini, who added 13 points with the boot, sealed a victory to
follow up last weekend's 25-18 upset of world champions England.
Argentina did not have it all their own way, however.
Italy were 9-3 up at half-time, thanks to three penalties by
fullback David Bortolussi, and finished the match on the attack
with winger Marko Stanojevic grabbing a late try to ensure a nervy
finale for the Pumas.
Todeschini, who scored 22 points against England last
weekend, capitalised on a solid, if not spectacular start by the
visitors when he kicked them ahead with a penalty after 14 minutes.
A foul in a lineout shortly after, however, gave Bortolussi
the chance to level with a kick of his own.
For long periods of the first half the contest was played out
in the middle of the pitch. Both teams made occasional forays into
the other's 22, but neither threatened to go over the line.
On the half-hour mark, Bortolussi missed a penalty wide on
the left but made up for his mistake shortly afterwards by firing
over another from just inside his own half.
He got another on the stroke of halftime after a late tackle
by Argentina captain Gonzalo Longo on Ramiro Pez, one of several on
Italy's Argentine-born flyhalf in the first half, to extend their
lead to six points.
An Argentina penalty trimmed the gap shortly after the
restart, though the overall impression was that Italy were lifting
their game with their backline showing signs of the flair that
characterised their Six Nations campaign earlier this year.
Just as they looked poised to take control Argentina hit
back.
Swift passing caught Italy's defences stretched on the right,
opening up space for Ignacio Corleto to sprint 50 metres down the
wing before offloading the ball to Todeschini for the first try of
the match.
The Pumas scored again in the 64th minute, flanker Martin
Durand slipping round Bortolussi on the left to start a move that
ended with Miguel Avramovic stepping round Mauro Bergamasco's
despairing tackle to go over the line.
Italy attacked once more. Walter Pozzebon's clever reverse
pass to set up Stanojevic's try was their finest moment, but
arrived too late to make a difference.
Todeschini capped a frustrating day for the Azzurri deep in
stoppage time, when he fired over his final penalty of the
match.
Scotland still have work to do
Scotland 34-22 Pacific Islanders:Scotland back-row forward Kelly Brown believes the second-half display against the Pacific Islanders proves the team still have work to do to prepare for the visit of Australia next week.
The Scots claimed a comfortable 31-5 lead at the interval in the second autumn Test. But Frank Hadden's team endured a nervy second half after two tries in quick succession clawed the visitors back into the game.
The Scots eventually held on for a 34-22 triumph but the Border Reivers man insists there is still more work needed next week ahead of the visit of the Wallabies.
Brown told BBC Scotland: "We scored some good tries in the first period, but, in the second half we tended to sit off a bit and they could pass it about a bit.
"Next week is a massive game for us but, after that second half, we have plenty to work on."
