Former RTÉ sports commentator Jim Sherwin dies, aged 81

The voice of rugby for over 30 years, he also covered eight Olympic Games and Grand Slam tennis

The death has taken place of commentator Jim Sherwin (81), who was known to Irish fans across many sports from rugby to tennis and the Olympic Games.

His career as a rugby commentator ran for over 30 years from 1970 to 2003. He also commentated for RTÉ for more than 20 years on the major tennis tournaments, including Grand Slam events, Wimbledon and the French Open.

His career at the Olympic games was equally impressive, serving as RTÉ’s main commentator for eight Olympics, from Munich in 1972 until Athens in 2004

Irish Rugby paid tribute to the Wicklow native, who passed away after a short illness.

“Everyone at Irish Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of rugby commentator Jim Sherwin,” said the IRFU in a statement published on social media.

“The ‘Voice of Rugby’ for generations, Jim was an iconic part of so many of our great days. May he Rest In Peace.”

He is survived by his wife Anne and four children, James, Ian, Cliona and John, along with 11 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
