Rugby:Garryowen gained a little bit of revenge when they defeated St Mary's College 19-3 in today's AIB Cup third round at Dooradoyle to make up for the recent league defeat in the same fixture.
Poor conditions made play difficult but the home side were good value for their win.
Gerry Hurley fired over two penalties to give Garryowen an early lead but Mary’s outhalf Gavin Dunne halved the deficit with a penalty of his own.
Hurley, a former Munster squad member, fired over with the boot before Paul Cunningham’s side eyed a place in the quarter-final after they were awarded a penalty try before the break.
The visitors trailed 16-3 at the interval and failed to make an impact in the second period.
Hurley added the icing on the cake with his fourth penalty of the game.
Garryowen will take on Division 1A rivals Blackrock College, who defeated Lansdowne 24-16, in the quarter-final tie at Stradbrook in two week’s time.
