Blue Bulls business manager Ian Schwartz has dismissed reports that International Rugby Board player of the year Bryan Habana is likely to join French Top 14 club Bayonne.
Habana's future was thought to be at the Bulls, but on Sunday French publication
claimed that the star Springbok wing and his team-mate Wynand Olivier had been spotted at a Top 14 fixture between Bayonne and Perpignan at the weekend, something Schwartz did not deny.
"Bryan and Wynand are very good friends and I can only imagine that they were there for holiday purposes," Schwartz told
.
It was, however, also reported in
that Habana was scheduled to meet with the French club's president, Francis Salagoïty, on Sunday. Whether or not that alleged meeting took place, however, has yet to be confirmed.
Schwartz was adamant that it was not at all possible that Habana or Olivier would leave the Pretoria-based Super 14 franchise, revealing: "Both players are contracted with the Blue Bulls until the end of October 2009.
"Bryan is the best player in the world and I would be very surprised if there were any clubs that didn't want his services. But I don't for one moment doubt his integrity and loyalty to the Bulls."
Apart from Habana's loyalty to the blue jersey, there has been considerable doubt about whether the French club could actually afford him, as
said that Habana's annual wages would be "at least" €350,000.
Meanwhile, with Schwartz dismissing all media reports about Habana moving abroad as "pure speculation", long-time Bulls team manager Wynie Strydom shared the same sentiment.
"As far as I'm concerned Habana is still with the Bulls," said Strydom told
. "He will join all his team-mates when training resumes in January. I know nothing at all about a possible move to France."
While Bernie Habana, Bryan's father and agent, could not be contacted, he was recently quoted in the press as saying that he was "sick and tired" of reading stories about his son leaving the Bulls, as none of them had been true.
