Edinburgh 20 Leinster 14: Ally Hogg was the Gunners glory man as he shook off a disastrous start to propel them to a morale-boosting Magners League triumph over Leinster at Murrayfield.

The breakaway forward snapped up one try and conjured up another for old stager Duncan Hodge to sink Michael Cheika's men, but the home team celebrations were muted as they anxiously waited for news of Test winger Simon Webster, who was stretchered off in a tense second half.

Edinburgh had got off to a shaky start, falling behind straight from the kick-off.

Hogg committed a knock-on while receiving — before a teammate gave away the penalty by playing the loose ball from an offside position.

Argentinian star Felipe Contepomi took advantage as his effort clear the crossbar just inside the post.

A slick move featuring centre Marcus Di Rollo and Webster set up an equaliser for skipper Chris Paterson — only for Contepomi to restore the visitors' advantage.

The Gunners should have surged ahead when another great surge by Webster created the time and space for rookie flanker Ross Rennie to burst through.

Rennie was left shaking his head in disbelief however, as the ball squirmed from his grasp before the line.

Edinburgh kept up the momentum and Paterson was back on target to square the issue once again.

They maintained the pressure, but without really posing a significant threat to the well-marshalled Leinster defence.

Leinster struck another important blow in the build-up to the interval as Contepomi completed a penalty treble from 30 metres.

The Gunners looked more fluent after the restart and they gradually took control, rewarded with a try in the 55th minute.

Following a spell of pressure inside the Leinster 22 zone, Scott Murray was halted just a pace short of the line.

They kept their patience and Hogg made up for his earlier error by ploughing over for the touchdown, which was safely converted by Paterson.

Hogg raced back into the spotlight to set up the clinching score by substitute Hodge.

Hogg powered through a midfield gap and looked destined to go all the way on his own.

However, he was brought down at the last moment, with veteran Hodge ideally placed to grab the offload before sliding over. Paterson calmly added the extra points.

Predictably, Leinster mounted a late series of raids in a bid to salvage at least a consolation bonus point and prop Ronan McCormack squeezed over a minute from time.
