Impressive Newbridge run in nine tries on way to victory

Superior skills see off brave performance from spirited Kilkenny College side

Newbridge College were very impressive as they recorded a nine-try haul to outclass a plucky Kilkenny College in this Bank of Ireland Leinster Senior Schools Cup first round tie at Oak Park in Carlow. Six players shared in the tries with three – Jimmy O’Brien, Mark Delaney and Colm Stapleton – crossing the line twice.

The first of the game's tries arrived in the ninth minute when Newbridge captain O'Brien crossed after a break from a scrum. Kilkenny missed two early penalties but skipper Peter Sunderland was on the mark with their only points of the half from a 14th minute penalty.

The superior ball skills of Newbridge became obvious as the half progressed and they were 10-3 ahead when O’Brien crossed again. The Kilkenny side always carried a serious threat with ball in hand and a number of their scores came from breakaways in their own half.

Flanker Tom O’Neill finished the scoring with a converted try. Newbridge scrumhalf Colm Doyle converted six of the nine tries.
