Rugby: Confirmation that Kiwi Mat Berquist will be out of action for four months with a fractured patella (kneecap) has Leinster teetering on the edge of a crisis at outhalf.

With Jonathan Sexton - not to mention scrumhalves Isaac Boss and Eoin Reddan - in the Irish squad on World Cup duty, Berquist sidelined and Ian McKinley forced into retirement after losing the sight in one eye, the playmaking responsibilities now rest with Ian Madigan, who must stay healthy for Joe Schmidt’s side.

After Madigan, Noel Reid comes into the reckoning, but the former St Michael's player is critically short of match experience at this level and has yet to debut for the Leinster senior team.

Isa Nacewa can also play at 10 but has been hugely influential in recent matches at fullback, although Luke Fitzgerald, who is expected back from a knee injury this week, has played at 15 for Ireland. It is clear, however, that Leinster are extremely thin at outhalf.

“We’re going to wait and see how things pan out,” said Leinster skills and kicking coach Richie Murphy today at the team training ground. “Obviously were a bit skinny there (at outhalf) with Ian McKinley losing the sight in his eye and Mat (getting injured) at the weekend.

“Noel Reid is another player coming back from injury. He had shoulder reconstruction only a couple of months back. He’s a talented young player. He played in the Irish under 20s a couple of seasons ago. He has never played at this level before so it’s going to be a case of wait and see how he gets on.”

Leinster face Scottish side Glasgow in the PRO12 at the RDS (KO: 6pm) on Saturday, a match that will not be televised. Schmidt is without 14 players, who are at the World Cup, Berquist, Shane Horgan, Andrew Conway, who will not be back for another few weeks, and secondrow Steven Sykes.

The team is expected to be announced on Friday at midday.
