Rugby:Munster's Barry Murphy has decided to hang up his boots after a catalogue of injuries throughout his career. A lengthy spell in the treatment room with a metatarsal problem proved to be the final straw, prompting the 28-year-old to retire from the professional game.
In doing so, Murphy will become the third Munster player to leave the province at the end of the season after Alan Quinlan and Ian Dowling also signaled their intentions to call it a day in recent weeks.
Murphy made the breakthrough to the Munster starting line-up in 2005 and although he went on to make 71 appearances – he was also capped four times for Ireland – his career was pockmarked by injury. He managed just three appearances during the current campaign but will walk away with no regrets.
"People say to me I've been unlucky and while I appreciate what they mean I don't see it that way,” he said. “The past seven or eight years have been a wonderful time in my life, playing with Munster. I've made loads of friends here in this squad, enjoyed some great times and I wouldn't trade a moment of it."
Laurie Fisher, meanwhile, has agreed to work alongside Jake White at the Brumbies when he leaves the Munster coaching ticket this summer.
