New Zealand make sweeping changes

New Zealand head coach Graham Henry has made seven changes for Saturday's clash with Wales at the Millennium Stadium.

Captain Richie McCaw and star fly-half Dan Carter both keep their places, while there is a return to the side for Rico Gear, who scored a hat-trick in the All Blacks' 41-3 victory over Wales a year ago.

Luke McAlister and Conrad Smith are reunited in the centres after Aaron Mauger was ruled out of contention with a knee injury.

Lock Chris Jack is rested, allowing Ali Williams and Keith Robinson to join forces in the second row while Neemia Tialata has overcome a calf injury to start at loose-head prop.

Mils Muliaina shifts to full-back and there is no place in the side for Ma'a Nonu, who started at inside centre in the 23-11 win over France last weekend.

Henry, the former Wales boss, had described that All Blacks side as his strongest possible selection.

But he explained the decision to make such sweeping changes was based on the threat he expects from a Wales side who have already promised to fight fire with fire.

"This is the team best suited to play Wales," he said. "The Welsh play a different style to the French and the match will be played in different conditions. We've made changes accordingly."

Mauger was forced home with a cartilage tear in his right knee, suffered in Zealand's 41-20 victory over England. He missed New Zealand's back-to-back victories over France and is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery when he returns to Christchurch.

Wales are scheduled to announce their team at 7.30am tomorrow morning.
