Cian Healy’s cursed run of injuries, dating back to the 2013 Lions tour of Australia, continues after the 27 year old underwent surgery Friday to repair a disc in his neck.
Healy is expected to make a full recovery but with no timescale he remains a doubt for September’s World Cup.
"Cian saw the specialist (Thursday) and had neck surgery this afternoon (Friday)," said Leinster coach Matt O'Connor. "He had his disc repaired this evening and he's recovery well. The surgeon is very happy with how it went.
“We’ll see how he pulls up post surgery,” said O’Connor after Leinster’s disappointing 10-0 victory over Treviso at the RDS, a result that guarantees them fifth place in the Pro 12, thereby avoiding a play-off against Gloucester to qualify for Europe.
“It shouldn’t be an issue (recovering for the world cup). The specialist was pretty concerned that there was a tight timescale relative to nerves being pretty significant.
“It was just a disc repair in his neck...he should make a full recovery.”
Healy already went under the knife in September, after tearing his hamstring off the bone in training, only returning off the bench against France in the Six Nations.
He also absent for several months of the previous campaign following ankle surgery.
“Thanks for all the well wishes,” Healy tweeted. “Surgery went very well today and I’ve my eyes already set on getting back in a few months.”
Meanwhile, O'Connor ruled out singing Peter Stringer on a short term contract during the World Cup.
