Rugby: Ulster hopes of securing a Heineken Cup quarter-final place were given a boost this afternoon when a lacklustre performance by Wasps resulted in a 20-10 defeat in Glasgow.

The result means Ulster and Leicester are best off the rest in the pools, up on 17 points apiece, with one gameweek to go.

With Wasps now still 15 points it looks like a win against Aironi Rugby in Italy next week will be sufficient for the 1999 champions to progress to the next round.

Wasps had built a 10-6 first-half lead with an early try from Tom Varndell plus the conversion and a penalty from Dave Walder.

But when Glasgow went ahead with a cracking try finished by Colin Gregor on 50 minutes to add to three penalties from Ruaridh Jackson, Wasps had nothing to offer and Glasgow's win was confirmed by a further penalty and drop-goal from Jackson.

Coach Tony Hanks was left "supremely disappointed" by the result, which left his side trailing Pool Six leaders and holders Toulouse by six points, ahead of next week's match against the French side.

"We've made it very difficult to get through; we're most likely going to have to rely on other results," he said. "We've let down the fans that came up to Glasgow. There's a good crowd coming to next week's match, at the minimum we have to respond for them.

"I've said to the players that we can't sit around sulking, we have to front up next week."

He continued: "We came to win, full of ambition. Bad days come along and today we timed a poor day really badly. But I don't want to take anything away from Glasgow who are a good, well coached side."
