The most realistic route to the last eight for Italy from group C might be to get at least a draw tonight and pray that the Czech Republic fail to match them against Russia at Anfield. It is a hope that was hardly enhanced yesterday by the news that Russia's top striker Sergei Kiryakov has been dismissed from the squad.
"Kiryakov was sent home for undermining the morale of the team," Oleg Romantsev, the Russian coach, said. "I don't want to give specific details, but during the whole time we've been here he has done a number of negative things."
Kiryakov, who plays for Germany's Karlsruhe, has scored 14 goals for Russia in his 33 appearances but only came on as substitute in the 2-1 defeat by Italy and did not play in the 3-0 drubbing by Germany. "I don't know how long my career as national trainer will last," Romantsev added. "But whether I work with the Russian team for another hour or another year, I will never go back to Kiryakov."
So far the Russians have been a disappointment to an extent that Romanstev lambasted his charges after the 3-0 defeat by Germany on Sunday and events since have not improved his humour. Quite apart from Kiryakov's banishment, Yevgeni Bushmanov is out of the tournament with an ankle injury while the Russians will also be without two other defenders, Yuri Kovtun and Viktor Onopko, who are suspended.
"If I had my time again," the coach said, "I would have brought other players, who although not as skilled as the ones here, have the right mental approach."
