Hurling Fitzgibbon Cup Final/Waterford IT 4-13 UCD 0-8: The scoreline was the most revealing fact of all after Saturday's Datapac Fitzgibbon Cup final in Páirc Uí Rinn.

It was WIT's canny knack of striking goals at opportune moments that really established a gulf between the sides. Willie Ryan grabbed most of the plaudits, the Tipperary man registering three goals.

His first-half brace, in the third and 23rd minutes, entailed replica efforts as corner forward Eoin Reid prised open the defence before releasing Ryan in space. On both occasions Ryan was deadly, finishing with power.

His third goal was another rocket, arriving at the end of the third quarter.

Yet it was WIT's other goal that effectively terminated the game as a contest.

WIT had been ahead 2-6 to 0-4 at half-time. Then immediately upon the resumption UCD were hit with a devastating blow.

Full back Michael Fitzgerald was uncharacteristically hesitant over a dropping ball and Reid pounced to poke home a soft shot.

Aside from opening up an 11-point gap, it was the manner of the score that truly killed UCD's aspirations.

From there until the end, the match petered out to its inevitable conclusion.
