All-Ireland SevensGarryspillane captured their first major piece of silverware at the Kilmacud hurling sevens in Glenalbyn on Saturday with former Limerick full back TJ Ryan hitting three goals.
Ryan has not played as a forward for his county since 1997 in the Munster championship but he did not take long to find the back of the net with two goals in the first half, helping Garryspillane to a 2-6 to 1-5 lead at the break.
Portroe, despite losing former Tipperary hurler Liam Sheedy who needed hospitalisation after injuring his knee in the first half, reduced the deficit to a point with goalkeeper Darren Gleeson converting a penalty shortly after the break.
But Ryan, operating at left-corner forward, restored Garryspillane's four-point advantage with his third goal in the next attack.
And despite back-to-back frees from Anthony Freeman for Portroe, Garryspillane held on to win on a 3-10 to 3-7 scoreline.
The most notable breakthrough of this year's tournament was that of London outfit Fr Murphy's who became the first overseas team to make it through to the knock-out stages.
