Paul Scholes should be fit to play for England in their Euro 2004 Group B match against Switzerland tomorrow despite twisting his ankle, coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said yesterday.

"I think he will play against Switzerland but I am not sure. The decision will be taken after the practice tomorrow," Eriksson said.

Scholes's chances of playing in the match were earlier rated at 50-50. England need to beat Switzerland after conceding two late goals to lose their opening game 2-1 to holders France. The Swiss drew their opening game against Croatia 0-0.

Eriksson said England defender John Terry has recovered from the injury that kept him out the France game.

"John Terry almost for sure will be there because yesterday he did everything (in training), today he did everything and he looked fit and sharp again.

"He will have another full session tomorrow and we will decide, but he seems okay," Eriksson said.

However, Nicky Butt was ruled out of the tournament earlier yesterday after suffering knee ligament damage in training. UEFA have not permitted the midfielder to be replaced.

Eriksson said: He hasn't had a lucky season I must say, so it' s a pity . . . but the good thing is he will not miss pre-season and doesn't require an operation."
