Scotland still unimpressive

Scotland 3 Faroe Islands 1Scotland manager Berti Vogts says his side will travel with confidence to face Germany in Wednesday's Euro 2004 Group Five qualifier despite a lacklustre 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands at Hampden Park on Saturday.

"I hope my team can maybe pick up one point from the Germans. We have nothing to lose there," Vogts said after goals from Neil McCann, Paul Dickov and substitute James McFadden clinched three points against the Faroes.

Scotland drew 2-2 with the Faroes a year ago and even though they had to regroup from losing a first-half equaliser to Julian Johnsson's header, there was little prospect of a similar embarrassing result this time.

Scotland made a vibrant start as Southampton winger McCann tucked a volley into the net from Paul Devlin's cross on seven minutes. The Faroes equalised as Scotland retreated when Johnsson nodded home from Jakup a Borg's corner on 36 minutes.

There were worried looks among the home fans but Scotland responded seconds before half-time when Steve Crawford crossed for Dickov to score his first Scotland goal. Everton striker McFadden wrapped up the win for Scotland as he slipped the ball into the net from McCann's cross on 74 minutes to score his first goal for his country.

Vogts hopes to have captain Paul Lambert - who missed the Faroes match with an ankle problem - and Don Hutchison back from injury to face Germany. "I think Paul will be ready for Wednesday and I'm hopeful for big Don," added Vogts, who will also have defenders Christian Dailly and Steven Pressley back from suspension.
