GOLF/Scottish PGA: Adam Scott signalled his determination to become a dominant force on the European Tour by taking command of the Scottish PGA Championship at Gleneagles yesterday.
Scott (22) defied the persistent rain at the Centenary Course to card a flawless second-round 65 for a 12-under halfway score of 132.
It gave the Australian a four-shot lead over his compatriot Richard Green who added a 71 to his opening 65, with the Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance a shot further back alongside Welshman David Park.
"I feel if I can keep playing like this, I can really put my foot down here and run away with it, but I've got to keep playing well. I've played in a great rhythm the last two days, not put myself in any trouble," Scott said.
"I've really taken advantage of the par fives. With five of them out there, that's the key to a good score."
Scott's win at the Qatar Masters in March was only his second on the European Tour, but he intends to get much closer to his mentor Greg Norman's total of 14 tour titles before switching to the US tour.
"I really feel until I become a dominant force over here then I don't think I'm ready to move," he said.
Scott missed the cut five times in six events in mid-season, but is reaping the rewards of a week with his coach Butch Harmon in Las Vegas before last week's US PGA Championship where he finished 23rd.
Ireland's Philip Walton added a steady 70 to his opening round 68 to stay within striking distance of Scott.
However, Des Smyth is a little further back in tied-31st position, a 72 yesterday leaves him at one-under for the tournament.
Green was not too disappointed to find himself chasing Scott after recovering from dropping two shots in his first three holes.
"I am better at coming from behind, it was how I won in Dubai and I also won a couple of tournaments Down Under where I wasn't leading going into the last round," said the Melbourne left-hander, who won the Dubai Desert Classic in 1997 in a play-off with Greg Norman and Ian Woosnam.
"I'm looking forward to the challenge again and I hope I'm playing with Adam tomorrow because I know him well and he is a good mate of mine out here."
The weather contributed to some miserable afternoons for a number of players, primary among them the former US Masters and Open champion Sandy Lyle.
Lyle carded a 68 on Thursday but slumped to an 82 to comfortably miss the cut, a birdie on the first followed by a triple-bogey eight on the next and six more bogeys in an outward half of 44.
