RacingSedgefield were hoping the expected warmer weather overnight materialised to allow today's meeting to go ahead. An inspection will take place at 7.30 this morning at the Cleveland track, where racing would not have been possible yesterday following a heavy frost on Sunday night.
The going was described yesterday afternoon as good to firm, good in places, but with frozen patches. "The forecast is for another frost tonight, but it is set to warm up afterwards. The temperature at 6 a.m. is forecast to be one degree and by mid-day plus three or four," said David McAllister of owners Northern Racing.
"The question is whether that will be enough to get the frozen patches out."
Both of yesterday's National Hunt meetings were called off due to freezing temperatures. Both Ayr and Newcastle called inspections but the tracks were forced to abandon their respective cards due to frost.
There are no problems reported for Fontwell where Paul Nicholls can land a double courtesy of Ask The Gatherer and Fair Prospect. Ask The Gatherer looks a useful recruit to the Ditcheat yard, having won a Wexford bumper on his only start in May, and he can take the novices' hurdle.
The five-year-old stayed on well to win by two and a half lengths and will have been well-schooled ahead of his jumping debut.
Nicholls can complete the double with Fair Prospect in the beginners' chase.
