Selcraig's K Club critique wins

GOLF: An Irish Times sports feature has won one of the most prestigious awards in US golf journalism

GOLF:An Irish Timessports feature has won one of the most prestigious awards in US golf journalism. The article, written by Bruce Selcraig, appeared on The Irish Timesgolf pages last June and looked at the decision to award the Ryder Cup to The K Club.

Entitled "Overpriced, overrated, over here", Selcraig's feature stirred up a controversy. Many golfers agreed with the sentiments expressed by the US writer that the competition should have gone to a links course that truly reflected the attractions of Irish golf.

In its annual awards, the US Golf Writers' Association selected The Irish Timesfeature as the outstanding column in a daily newspaper across the world. Selcraig, who writes occasionally for The Irish Times, is a former Sports Illustratedjournalist who now contributes to a range of leading publications, including the New York Times.

He will receive the award at a dinner in Augusta on the eve of next month's US Masters.
